Site news: Site improvements—a look under the hood
A whole bunch of changes have been made to Thinair->Art! way down in the belly of the beast. To those with an above-ground perspective such change can be hard to see. If it does come into awareness it's more like things one feels vs. easily identified.
But there are some user-visible elements even if they're subtle. A big one, you might notice that pages load faster, in some cases a lot faster and that's a really good thing. A lot of effort went into minimizing delays. For example, one hangup was fonts, turned out downloading from our own server was faster than relying on Google to get them for you. FWIW that sure wasn't immediately obvious.
This attention to the infrastructure sort of elements is based on a philosophy that says it's more important that the site works well than look dazzling. Not that dazzling looks is unimportant, certainly ideal have a sizzling appearance and work great too, it's simply a matter of priorities, and often enough, tradeoffs. Getting the site to run smoothly and quickly was more urgent than other considerations, we did not want to spread the brokenness that exists all around the internet and well beyond.
The internal “engine” that generates pages has been substantially revised. An achieved goal of the restructuring was making the code generic, eliminating all traces of Thinair-specific elements in the basic modules. That makes the tools much more easily applied to building any sort of site, IOW gives developers a platform which can be customized for particular purposes.
So within a few days the new version of Tcl Web Generator will be uploaded to the site where anyone can access it and use it for themselves. Much more new content is next on the agenda. In any case please feel free to give us your feedback on the site, we always appreciate your views!
We're also working on incorporating a comment system so that visitor feedback can be read by others. Always interesting, sometimes entertaining or even enlightening to find out what others think though of course your opinion might be different and possibly even more on target.
Developing this site has been greatly rewarding experience. Educational to say the least, can't help but learn a lot taking on new and challenging endeavors. You might think the results are outstanding, terrible or some shade of success between. Whatever it is we'd sincerely like to know, it's the surest way to further improvement.
